KAROUSSOS ARCHIVES | ARCHIVE 1.0: THE HYBRID FRESCOES OF ST. SPYRIDON CHAPEL

The chapel of St. Spyridon, at the historical village of Verga, belongs to the type of single-naved wooden-roofed church with a prominent shield for the chancel in hemispherical plan. Inside the chancel, frescoes of the 18th century are preserved, providing a chronological terminus for the construction of the temple. Therefore, the building dates back to the pre-revolutionary period and is automatically protected by the provisions of Law 3028/2002 "On the protection of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage in general" The chapel has been revived by the hybrid frescoes, based entirely on the work of the late painter Yiannis Karoussos under the project Archive1.0 of Karoussos Archives which concerns the reinstatement and reintegration of Byzantine and post-Byzantine monuments.
