"SUMATRA - EVERYTHING IS CLOSED"

The Orthodox Mission in Sumatra of Indonesia.

Fr Chrysostom Manalu was born in Sumatra, Indonesia to a Protestant family. He was orthodox by Fr. Daniel Byantoro and in 1994 he came to Greece for postgraduate studies in Theology. At that time he was associated as a layman with our Brotherhood and was ordained an elder in the Holy Diocese of Arta. He returned to Indonesia in 2002, founded the Orthodox Mission in North Sumatra and serves as Hierarchical Commissioner of Indonesia under the Diocese of Singapore.

“... The rallies are daily. 15 million Indonesians are unemployed. Product prices are rising. We do what we can.”

Dear friends of the Mission, With God's help we are well and we pray the same for you. This year we celebrated St. Demetrius in Medan Cathedral with simplicity, because our parish is still closed to the large number of believers. So far we have no announcement from the government when churches, schools, shops, etc. will be able to operate. So, we do not know what will happen at Christmas. Our finances are getting worse every day. But we have our hope in Jesus Christ and in the Virgin Mary, because we know that strength and comfort come from them.

Since March I have done very few tours in the villages, because many have been quarantined. Factories and construction sites closed. The rallies are daily. 15 million Indonesians are unemployed. Product prices are rising. We do what we can. The elder makes coconut oil, some plant corn, some graze goats, some small poultry. Everything we can do not to starve, because we do not know when this situation will end. So, my brothers and sisters, we always ask for your prayers. Let us glorify the Holy Name of the Triune God, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Fr. Chrysostomos Manalu
